Making New York a Leader in EV Infrastructure

The New York Power Authority’s EVolve NY program’s vision: Make electric vehicles an affordable, convenient option and help provide New Yorkers with cleaner air. We’re working to make sure that whatever EV you’re driving, you’ll have public, easy-to-find options throughout the state for quickly recharging your vehicle.

The heart of the EVolve NY program is

installing up to 400 new EV fast charging stations throughout the state by early 2026
locating chargers along the state’s major highway corridors, from north to south and from east to west
positioning chargers often within just a few minutes of the exit

EV charging in New York State’s largest cities will be easier, too. EVolve NY will install fast charging hubs in New York City and the state's other largest cities. NYPA has already partnered with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to install a new 10-port charging station at John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens, the largest public fast-charging station in the Northeast.

And to make EV ownership even more affordable, the state's Drive Clean Rebate offers a rebate of up to $2,000 for new EV purchases or leases.

EVolve NY FAQ

Do EVolve NY charging stations work for any electric vehicle?

Yes, as long as the vehicle has fast charging capability (virtually every new, fully electric car is capable of fast charging, while plug-in hybrid cars that also have gas tanks tend not to be equipped with fast charging). Tesla vehicles can charge via their CHAdeMO port using an adapter (adapters are available at select charging locations).

Can I use my own adapter at an EVolve NY charging station?

New York Power Authority only permits the use of adapters sold by automakers on its chargers. Adapters sold by automakers are certified to work with their vehicles. Use of any other adapter on our chargers is prohibited. The integrity and reliability of third-party adapters cannot be guaranteed and therefore are not permitted on our network. Tesla adapters are available at the following EVolve NY charging locations:

How much of New York State will EVolve NY charging stations cover?

Ultimately drivers will be able to travel all of New York State with confidence that a charging station is within 50 miles of their location, on average. Charging stations will be located:

Along the state’s major highway corridors, usually within five minutes of the roadway exit
In New York City, Yonkers, Albany, Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo

How long does it take to charge a vehicle at an EVolve NY charging station?

Typically 15-30 minutes. The actual time depends on:

How much charge there is in the battery
How much charge you want to add to the battery
The vehicle’s charging speed (older EV models generally charge at slower rates).

How much does a typical charging session cost?

Let’s use an example with a hypothetical price of $0.45 per kWh (the standard unit of energy in your EV’s battery). The largest EV batteries on the market today are nearly 100 kWh. To charge a 100kWh battery from 0% to 100% would cost $45. To charge that same battery from 20% to 80% (80% charge is recommended to optimize battery health) would cost $27 ($0.45/kWh x 60% x 100 kWh =$27).

What methods of payment are accepted at charging stations?

Visa and Mastercard are accepted via chip insert American Express and Discover are accepted via swipe Mobile pay as well as on-line payment through various apps.

What should I do if a charger is not working properly?

Each charging station has a phone number to call for 24/7 help in troubleshooting any charging or payment issues. Peace of mind and reliability are EVolve NY’s top priorities; if users cannot initiate charging themselves, the help line can remotely begin the charging session.

Is there an EVolve NY app?
